Vitamins

What This Test Measures

Measures the storage form of Vitamin D; the best overall indicator of vitamin D status.

Preparation

No fasting required
No special prep. Results not significantly affected by fasting or time of day. Morning draw preferred for consistency.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Patient Community Notes

TIMING: No need to fast, but the functional medicine community recommends stopping vitamin D supplements for 24โ€“48 hours before the draw to avoid an artificial spike from the most recent dose. After starting a loading dose protocol, wait 2โ€“3 months before retesting โ€” it takes time for levels to stabilize. The functional medicine community targets 50โ€“80 ng/mL for immune support and autoimmune conditions, significantly above the standard 30 ng/mL floor. For Hashimoto's, Graves', or chronic illness, practitioners often target the higher end. Note: for patients with hyperparathyroidism or kidney disease, discuss targets with your provider.

Reflects common practices in thyroid, BHRT, and functional medicine communities. This may differ from standard clinical guidelines. Not medical advice โ€” always discuss with your provider.

General guidelines only. Requirements vary by lab and individual. Confirm with your provider before adjusting any medications.
